Komen for the Cure began its partnership with Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA) fraternity, in partnership with the ZTA Foundation, in 1992.  As a Co-Sponsor of the National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program at Komen Race for the Cure® events, ZTA members nationwide volunteer countless hours in support of local Race events. ZTA, along with co-sponsor RE/MAX, celebrate breast cancer survivors by providing the signature pink t-shirts and caps for survivors to wear during the Race.  Race participants receive “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs to honor a friend or loved one.

Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation has funded a variety of programs associated with the breast cancer movement. Zetas have distributed more than 9.25 million waterproof Breast Self Examination Cards, 5 million Breast Self Examination Calendar Reminder Stickers and 3 million THINK-PINK!® ribbons and information cards in order to promote breast cancer education in numerous local communities.

In 2003, the ZTA Foundation registered the trademark THINK-PINK!® for the purpose of educational services, breast cancer awareness and self-examination instruction. Registering the trademark ensures that ZTA can continue to enhance community awareness with a more concentrated and recognizable campaign and focus.

ZTA Philanthropy History:

In 1928, residents in rural communities of the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia were the first to benefit from ZTA’s philanthropic efforts. Zetas aided the people of Currin Valley in Smith City, Virginia, where ZTA established a health center. At the close of the Health

Center in 1946, ZTA adopted the Cerebral Palsy Division of the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Later, ZTA adopted Easter Seals. In 1970, ZTA formed an

alliance with the Association for Retarded Citizens (now known as The ARC) as its national philanthropy. Over the years, in addition to its designated national philanthropy, Zeta Tau Alpha has also supported the Red Cross, the Sunshine Kids Foundation and Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF).

In 1992, ZTA adopted The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as its national philanthropy. Later, the Fraternity broadened its focus to encompass not only the Komen Foundation, but also other educational means dedicated to fighting breast cancer through education, awareness and promoting breast health. Furthermore, each alumnae and collegiate chapter generally volunteers with one or more local philanthropy of its choosing in addition to their support of the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation and ZTA’s national philanthropy.

Today, our National Philanthropy is Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. See THINK-PINK!®, NFL, Yoplait, Courage Night and Susan G Komen Race for the Cure® Survivor Program links at zetataualpha.org for detailed information.

Zeta Tau Alpha’s National Philanthropy -

Breast Cancer Education and Awareness

ZTA is devoted to aid in efforts in the fight against breast cancer through education, awareness, research and by promoting breast health. ZTA supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation with a donation each year. More than $1.6 million has been donated to the Komen foundation since 1992. In addition to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Komen Race for the Cure and the National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program, ZTA also supports the fight against breast cancer through its own education and awareness programs.

The “Think Pink” campaign is now ZTA’s primary project for breast cancer awareness. While this program is typically implemented in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our chapter promotes “Think Pink” throughout the year. We pass out information cards conveying the message of early detection through breast self-examination, clinical examinations and screening mammography. Also, we pass out the “One in Eight” stickers, which give additional information about early detection.
